Flawed Installation and Rushed Timeline Blamed for Pool Damage
In a court filing submitted to a Superior Court judge, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that newly discovered documents proved the widespread damage to the pool resulted from a flawed installation by contractor Atlantic Industrial Coatings and a rush to complete the project prior to America 250 celebration events on July 4. This admission contrasts with Pirro’s July 2 news conference, where she asserted that prosecutors possessed “tremendous evidence” supporting Hearn’s indictment and condemned unchecked vandalism.
Legal Defense Criticizes Administration and Cites Overreach
Hearn, who pleaded not guilty last month to a felony charge of destruction of property, was scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 28. Following Friday’s development, his defense lawyers issued a statement declaring that the charges should never have been brought, criticizing the government’s approach as “ready, fire, aim” and demanding an apology from the administration. While Hearn was the only individual facing a felony charge in the matter, it remains unclear whether cases against the six other defendants—three of whom face misdemeanor charges for property destruction under $1,000—will also be dismissed.
Cost Overruns and Unsubstantiated Sabotage Claims Surround Project
The Trump administration’s $16.4 million renovation effort has faced intense criticism regarding its costs and its use of expedited, no-bid contracts to meet the July 4 deadline. The project involved upgrading water-purification systems, sealing concrete joints, and applying a waterproofing material designated as “American flag blue.” As algae blooms turned the pool water green following the removal of combating devices, President Trump asserted that vandals had introduced fertilizer and slashed the lining with knives in the dark of night, though no supporting evidence was provided and no defendants were accused of cutting the paint.
