Celta Vigo Postpones LaLiga Opener Against Osasuna Due to Fungus Outbreak

Celta Vigo’s opening match of the LaLiga season against Osasuna has been postponed due to a fungus outbreak affecting the pitch at Estadio de Balaidos. The decision was made jointly by LaLiga, both clubs, and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) after inspecting the field and concluding that it was unplayable.

Initially scheduled for Sunday, the match’s new date has been set for August 27. However, Osasuna has expressed discontent with this decision, stating it contradicts a prior agreement to play the match on either September 24 or 25 during the international break. Osasuna argues that this alternative timing would help manage their schedule and allow player recovery.

In a statement, Osasuna acknowledged the poor condition of the pitch due to the fungus and recognized the efforts made by Celta Vigo to address the issue. Nevertheless, they criticized LaLiga and the RFEF for unilaterally changing the match date just three days before the originally scheduled kickoff, calling it “unacceptable and disrespectful.” The club emphasized that the decision reflects a troubling pattern of last-minute changes in the league’s calendar.

Celta Vigo confirmed that LaLiga had already inspected the field in the week prior, validating the maintenance work being conducted to manage the fungus issue. However, recent weather conditions have reportedly worsened the situation, leading to the postponement.

Osasuna further clarified that both LaLiga and the RFEF were aware of the previous agreement between the clubs regarding the timing of the rescheduled match, stating that the team most adversely affected by the initial postponement has now been further impacted by the new schedule.
