Carrick States Manchester United “Need” More Signings Before Transfer Deadline

COUNTY KILDARE, Ireland — Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has emphasized the need for additional signings ahead of the upcoming transfer deadline, expressing that the club “need” to bolster their squad. With less than three weeks remaining until the window closes on September 1, Carrick is adamant that acquiring new talent is crucial for strengthening the team.

So far, United has made significant moves in the market, spending £85 million to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. In an interview during United’s preseason training camp in County Kildare, Carrick expressed satisfaction with the arrivals, stating, “We’re delighted with the players we’ve brought in, first and foremost. I think we’ve improved the group, we’ve improved the squad in different ways — balance, quality and the direction we want to go in.”

Despite the positive additions, the manager acknowledges that improvement must continue. “We always want to improve, we want more, we need more. We keep looking for how we can do that, so that never stops,” he stated. Carrick mentioned that United is particularly interested in a new left-back, with Lewis Hall from Newcastle being one of the names linked to the club.

Additionally, sources have indicated that the club is looking to add a third midfielder following Casemiro’s departure and the knee ligament injury of Manuel Ugarte, which is expected to sideline the Uruguayan for most of the season. Carrick noted, “There’s one or two areas where we’d like to improve and we feel that there’s the possibility to improve,” while refraining from specifying a number of new arrivals needed within the next 18 days.

Manchester United’s net spend this summer is reportedly around £30 million, following funds received from Rasmus Hojlund’s move to Napoli, Radek Vítek’s transfer to Middlesbrough, and a sell-on clause activated by Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Fenerbahce. Insiders have indicated that there is still financial leverage available for further signings as the transfer window approaches its conclusion.

While United had the financial capability to match Tottenham’s £85 million bid for Mateus Fernandes, they opted not to proceed. This has left United as the only club among the traditional top six in the Premier League that has never spent £100 million on a single player. Carrick suggested that a shift in strategy may be necessary for the club to remain competitive against rivals such as Arsenal and Manchester City.

“Money’s money, I get that. It’s still about the football, and that’s where the competition lies,” he remarked. Carrick conveyed that United is committed to pushing for success, saying that the club must keep striving for improvement in every capacity to reclaim a winning status.
