Indian Men’s Hockey Team Concludes FIH Pro League Season with Shootout Victory Over England
The Indian men’s hockey team rounded off their FIH Pro League season on a high note by defeating England 3-2 in a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 0-0 draw in regular time. This victory secured India a bonus point, bringing their total to 19 points from 16 matches and placing them eighth in the league, just above bottom-placed Spain due to a marginally higher number of wins.
The match largely lacked excitement, with both teams struggling to generate scoring opportunities through the first three quarters. England had an early close call, thwarted by a strong save from Indian goalkeeper Mohith HS. The physicality of the game heightened with moments of tension between the players. However, the final quarter saw increased action as England aggressively sought to break the stalemate, with Suraj Karkera stepping up to make crucial saves for India.
This encounter marked a repeat of their previous fixture, which also ended in a penalty shootout, where England had claimed the bonus point. In the shootout this time around, Mohith’s standout performance continued as he forced several errors from the English players. For India, Abhishek, Shilanand Lakra, and Hardik Singh (stroke) found the net, while Sukhjeet Singh and Dilpreet Singh were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. For England, only Zach Wallace (stroke) and David Goodfield scored, whereas Thomas Sorsby, Henry Croft, and Jack Waller missed their attempts.
India’s head coach, Craig Fulton, expressed satisfaction with the team’s improvement during their European tour, where they secured four victories, two draws, and suffered two defeats across matches in Rotterdam and London. This conclusion to the season represents a significant turnaround after India went winless in their previous eight games and faced losses in all four matches against Belgium and Argentina at home.
Meanwhile, Belgium claimed the Pro League title with 39 points, securing their place at the LA 2028 Olympics. Pakistan, however, endured a disappointing campaign, finishing last in the league with no wins from 16 matches and being relegated to the FIH Nations Cup.
