Indian Women’s Hockey Team Opens FIH World Cup Qualifiers with 4-0 Victory Over Uruguay

The Indian women’s hockey team commenced their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers campaign with a resounding 4-0 win against Uruguay on Sunday at Gachibowli Stadium in Hyderabad. Goals from Sunelita Toppo, Ishika, Lalremsiami, and Rutuja Pisal secured a dominant performance for the home team.

Initially, India took time to find their rhythm, ending the first quarter without any goals. However, their pressure increased in the second quarter, leading to a breakthrough in the 21st minute. Annu’s dragflick on a penalty corner took a slight deflection off Sunelita Toppo, allowing it to slip past the Uruguay goalkeeper.

India doubled their lead in the 40th minute when Ishika seamlessly converted a quick pass from Sakshi Rana, delivering a solid finish. Just nine minutes later, Lalremsiami, who had been consistently threatening throughout the match, finally scored with a powerful hit. By this stage, India had established complete control against an Uruguay side that struggled to penetrate their defense.

The scoring culminated two minutes before the final whistle, as Rutuja Pisal entered the circle unchallenged and made no mistake in finding the back of the net. This marked a successful beginning for head coach Sjoerd Marijne in his second tenure, as he aims for another strong performance against Scotland on Monday.

In earlier matches on the same day, England triumphed over Italy with a score of 5-2, while South Korea edged past Austria 1-0, and Scotland narrowly defeated Wales 1-0.
