Controversies Arise at BWF India Open Super 750 Over Playing Conditions and Pollution

The BWF India Open Super 750 is facing significant scrutiny surrounding its playing and practice conditions, as well as the prevailing pollution in New Delhi. Reports indicate that at least one top-ranked player declined to participate due to these issues, while several others have voiced concerns regarding cleanliness. The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has defended the event’s organization, attributing challenging weather and pollution to factors beyond their control. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) acknowledged the complaints but confirmed that the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex met their Field of Play standards, despite highlighting issues related to cleanliness and hygiene.

Cleanliness Concerns

Danish player Mia Blichfeldt, currently ranked 20th in the world, expressed dissatisfaction after her first-round win, stating, “I actually hoped it was going to be better than the other hall. I think it’s still very dirty and really unhealthy conditions for all the players.” Blichfeldt had similar concerns last year and had been optimistic about the changes in venue. While she clarified that court conditions were fine, she raised concerns about overall health conditions for athletes participating in this year’s tournament.

BAI Secretary Sanjay Mishra responded to Blichfeldt’s remarks, suggesting her complaints were based on personal sensitivities, asserting that many players appreciated the event’s arrangements. He clarified that her references to cleanliness related to the KD Jadhav Stadium, the training venue, rather than the main playing arena itself.

Temperature Issues

Players have also reported that the courts’ temperatures have been excessively cold, impeding proper warm-ups. Blichfeldt noted that players have had to wear multiple layers for warm-ups. Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon suggested the need for heaters, while Canadian Michelle Li echoed similar sentiments, stating, “I felt kind of cold, it was hard to warm up in there.” Mishra acknowledged the cool conditions and mentioned that heaters were being provided, but emphasized that complaints should not be attributed to a single athlete’s perspective.

Animal Interruptions

Incidents involving wildlife have also raised eyebrows, with Instagram posts showing monkeys in the stands during matches. Korean doubles player Kang Minhyuk questioned whether animals were allowed entry. Mishra indicated that this was an isolated incident, revealing that staff had been monitoring the venue closely, and measures would be reinforced to prevent future occurrences.

Pollution Challenges

The tournament is also grappling with health concerns stemming from New Delhi’s severe pollution levels. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has shown readings categorizing it as harmful. Danish player Anders Antonsen announced he would not participate due to pollution, claiming the conditions were inadequate for a tournament. Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew reported that his stamina had decreased since the preceding Malaysia Open, noting difficulties in breathing and frequent mask usage outdoors.

Mishra dismissed Antonsen’s perspective, stating that one could not critique conditions from afar and reaffirmed confidence that the venue would not face such pollution issues during the upcoming August World Championships.

Other Venue Challenges

BAI has explored alternative venues such as Kochi, Pune, and Guwahati but faced logistical hurdles that prevented moving the tournament. Concerns included inadequate stadium seating and hotel accommodations necessary for hosting.

Overall Assessment

In response to these ongoing controversies, the BWF stated it has been collecting player feedback to enhance the tournament experience. While challenges related to weather and air quality were acknowledged, they believe that the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex is a significant improvement over previous venues.
