Changes from 2026 World Cup Set to Impact Upcoming Premier League Season

The 2026 World Cup introduced several new regulations aimed at enhancing match speed and fan experience, many of which will be adopted by the Premier League as the 2026-27 season approaches. Arsenal is set to host Coventry City in the league opener, prompting discussion on which World Cup changes will take effect in English football.

New Time Regulations

Players receiving on-field injury treatment will now be required to leave the pitch for a minimum of one minute. Previously, the Premier League enforced a 30-second exit rule, which had reportedly led to a 70% decrease in on-field medical treatments during matches. However, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) mandated this change, leaving the Premier League with no choice but to comply.

Additionally, players will now face a five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks once a referee deems them to be delaying the game. This regulation was successfully tested during the World Cup and is expected to positively influence the pace of matches in the Premier League. Furthermore, a new ten-second rule for player substitutions will be implemented. If a player exceeds this limit, their replacement cannot enter the game until play stops or one minute has passed, a move aimed at reducing time-wasting instances.

Changes to VAR Protocols

In terms of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) procedures, reviews will now occur for incorrectly shown second yellow cards, a rare but significant event that can parallel the implications of a straight red card. However, these reviews will only address factual errors, ensuring that subjective decisions remain untouched.

Another VAR alteration involves the ability to correct cards issued to the wrong player. This rule aims to streamline officiating amid cases of mistaken identity but will be limited to the same infringement type, preventing cross-infringement corrections.
