Rocky Flintoff’s Century Sparks Lancashire to Historic 174-Run Victory Over Somerset

In a remarkable display at Taunton, Lancashire achieved their highest-ever List A total of 443 for 6, securing a decisive 174-run victory over Somerset. This crucial win propelled Lancashire into the knockout stages of the competition. The standout performer was 18-year-old Rocky Flintoff, who marked his first List A century with a blistering 123 runs off just 76 balls.

Opening batsman Keaton Jennings also played a pivotal role, scoring 156 runs from 127 balls, as the duo together set a fourth-wicket partnership of 214 runs in just 21.1 overs. Their explosive performance included a total of 20 sixes.

Bowling Collapse for Somerset

Invited to bat first, Lancashire capitalized on excellent batting conditions, as Somerset’s decision to bowl first under clear skies backfired. After a solid opening partnership of 83 runs, Lancashire’s innings powered forward with Flintoff and Jennings leading the assault, managing to accumulate 289 runs in the last 25 overs.

In response, Somerset struggled, bowled out for 269 in 39.2 overs. Tom Lammonby was the top scorer with 68 runs, while Tom Aspinwall (4 for 42) and George Balderson (4 for 58) ensured that Somerset’s batting lineup had no respite.

Matty Hurst contributed 47 runs but fell victim to Archie Vaughan, alongside Josh Bohannon. Somerset’s batting woes were highlighted when they lost their first two wickets for just 33 runs, eventually falling behind the required run rate of over ten an over. Lammonby’s innings of 68 included ten fours but was not enough to prevent a comprehensive defeat.

Flintoff’s explosive batting was reminiscent of his father, Andrew Flintoff, who recently stepped down as England Lions head coach. Rocky Flintoff celebrated his maiden List A century with exuberance, underscoring the bright future that lies ahead.

Though Somerset’s Ben Church showed promise with 24 runs, it was ultimately a day to forget for the hosts, who were outplayed in every aspect of the game.
