Fenway Sports Group Confirms Minority Stake Sale in Liverpool to Consortium Including Jeff Bezos
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owner of Liverpool Football Club, has announced the sale of a minority stake in the club to a consortium named 1892 Holdings, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The consortium will be led by Amit Bhatia, a British Indian businessman and former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers, who will also serve as the club’s new vice chairman.
Sources indicate that the minority stake is approximately 30%, raising Liverpool’s overall valuation to about £5.5 billion ($7.45 billion). The consortium also encompasses the K5 Sports fund, chaired by Bezos, along with EE Capital, the family office of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife Elaine, who is expected to join Liverpool’s board. This investment marks Bezos’ entry into sports investment following years of speculation regarding potential investments in various NFL teams.
Bezos, currently the world’s third-richest individual, has an estimated net worth of $271.4 billion (£200.3 billion) according to Forbes. However, he will not be directly involved in the club’s board, with representation handled through Bryan Baum, managing partner of K5 Global.
Bhatia expressed pride in partnering with FSG, stating, “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege.” He emphasized the consortium’s commitment to supporting Liverpool’s continued success.
FSG, which acquired Liverpool for £300 million in 2010 and also owns the Boston Red Sox, maintains majority ownership and operational control of the club. Changes to daily operations are not anticipated. FSG President Mike Gordon commented on the investment, highlighting the ongoing appeal of Liverpool’s long-term strategic vision to respected investors.
This minority investment is the first external financing in Liverpool since Dynasty Equity acquired a 3% stake for approximately $200 million in September 2023. Under FSG’s stewardship, Liverpool ended a 30-year drought for an English league title in 2020 and captured another Premier League title last season, matching Manchester United with 20 top-flight championships. Additionally, Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League for the sixth time in 2019, setting a record for English teams.
The Premier League now stands as one of the largest sports leagues globally, with numerous teams owned by affluent entities and private equity firms.
