London Spirit Defeats Birmingham Phoenix by Seven Wickets in the Hundred
In a clash of the bottom two teams in the Hundred men’s competition, London Spirit claimed victory over Birmingham Phoenix by seven wickets, marking Phoenix’s sixth loss in seven matches this season. Both teams had previously managed only one win, leaving Birmingham firmly at the bottom of the table.
Birmingham’s leading run-scorer Joe Clarke continued to shine, scoring 73 runs. However, he struggled to find reliable partners as Mitchell Owen, Joe Weatherley, and Laurie Evans all made single-digit contributions. Spirit’s bowlers, particularly spinners James Coles and Mason Crane, maintained tight lines, leading to Clarke forming a crucial partnership with Sean Dickson. The pair added 92 runs in just 47 balls before Clarke was dismissed by debutant Henry Crocombe, who had him caught by Liam Livingstone on his first delivery.
Phoenix posted a total of 162 for 4, adding 109 runs in the second half of their innings, with captain Donovan Ferreira providing a late flourish. The score seemed competitive as Spirit took to bat.
Jonny Bairstow’s innings was brief, lasting only three balls and resulting in a score of 6-4-W. Liam Livingstone, facing his former team, quickly took command after the departure of Lhuan-dre Pretorius. He teamed up with Dewald Brevis, who is known for his remarkable ability to hit more sixes than fours in T20 cricket.
The duo displayed aggressive batting, with Livingstone reaching a swift 50 off just 21 balls, which included a mammoth 104-meter six. They effectively managed the match, particularly against the challenging Usman Tariq, who conceded a mere 13 runs off 20 deliveries. With 45 balls remaining, the run rate required had been reduced to a run a ball.
Livingstone finished with an impressive 66 runs off 30 balls, while Brevis completed the chase with an unbeaten 55 off 31, sealing the victory with 18 balls to spare. Livingstone was named the Meerkat Match Hero, and he remarked, “We felt like it was a decent wicket and they were under par. I love batting with Brev. He’s a tremendous talent and he hits it as hard as anyone in the world.”
