London Spirit Defeats Birmingham Phoenix by 32 Runs at Lord’s

In a match devoid of playoff stakes, London Spirit triumphed over Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs at Lord’s, led by an impressive performance from South African allrounder Marizanne Kapp. Kapp’s contributions with both bat and ball proved crucial in ensuring Spirit’s victory.

In the batting innings, Spirit initially struggled as Grace Harris fell early. Although Amy Jones provided a glimmer of hope with a brisk 30-ball 39, the Phoenix bowlers, particularly Australian legspinner Alana King, stifled the scoring, taking 2 wickets for 18 runs. At 75 for 3 off 68 balls, Phoenix seemed in control, but Kapp shifted the momentum with a late assault, hitting six sixes, including four consecutive shots off Alice Capsey. With support from Nadine de Klerk, who also cleared the ropes against Lauren Filer, Spirit set a challenging target of 140 for 4, scoring 37 runs in the last 10 deliveries.

As Phoenix chased this target, Kapp quickly dismantled their efforts, claiming the wicket of Jemima Spence while conceding just 10 runs in her opening 15 balls. Spirit captain Charlie Dean also showcased her bowling prowess, claiming the key wickets of Davina Perrin, Ellyse Perry—which was taken by a spectacular catch from Katie George—and Tammy Beaumont. The latter dismissal occurred when Phoenix required 62 runs from just 23 balls, effectively snuffing out any hopes they had for a comeback.

Emma Lamb emerged as a standout for Phoenix with a score of 36 off 26 balls, but her lone effort was insufficient amid a flurry of fallen wickets. The team ultimately concluded their innings at 108 for 8, a frustrating end that mirrored their underwhelming campaign.

Kapp, named Meerkat Match Hero, expressed her fondness for Lord’s, stating, “The atmosphere is so special here. There’s something about this ground and I’ve been blessed to play here for the last couple of years.” Reflecting on Spirit’s overall performance throughout the tournament, she acknowledged their challenges, noting, “To be honest, we haven’t batted as well as we would have liked… Today was probably the first time that we batted first and really worked out the conditions.”
