Premier League Preseason Insights: Notable Performers and Struggles Ahead of 2026-27 Season
The unpredictability of the Premier League sets the stage for the 2026-27 season, with Arsenal triumphing over Manchester City for the title last season, while Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation. With nine clubs appointing new managers, including Manchester City and Tottenham, the landscape has shifted, prompting interest in the current preseason preparations.
Preseason matchups provide insight into team dynamics, though past performances can be misleading. Players like Max Dowman and Rio Ngumoha have emerged as key young talents. Dowman, just 16, made a strong impression with a goal and an assist during a 4-1 victory against Girona. Despite his previous hype after friendly matches in Asia, his future playing time remains uncertain. Ngumoha, a 17-year-old winger for Liverpool, has also seen considerable action, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Wrexham during their U.S. tour.
A standout this preseason has been Aston Villa’s Brian Madjo, who has scored four goals since joining the club for £10 million from Metz. He netted twice against Walsall and added goals against Real Sociedad and an Indonesian All-Star team, alongside scoring Villa’s only goal in a 2-1 UEFA Super Cup loss to PSG. His recent on-field success follows the lifting of FIFA restrictions preventing him from playing at any level due to his age. If selected by manager Unai Emery, Madjo could make his Premier League debut soon.
Key Performers
Nottingham Forest’s Gabriel Jesus is finding form after a lackluster goal tally last season, as he scored four times in consecutive preseason matches. Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo has maintained his momentum, assisting five goals during the club’s friendlies, reaffirming his pivotal role in the upcoming season.
New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been afforded valuable time to assess his squad since starting a few weeks ago. Under his guidance, star player João Pedro has shone brightly, scoring five goals in preseason, although Chelsea faced defeats against Tottenham and Juventus.
Areas of Concern
Conversely, Liverpool’s defense is raising red flags, with injuries plaguing the lineup. Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez are sidelined, while new signing Jérémy Jacquet is still recovering from a shoulder injury. The club has secured a season-long loan for Barcelona’s Ronald Araújo to help bolster the defense, which relies heavily on the veteran Virgil van Dijk, who logged over 6,000 minutes last season.
Preseason injuries have also affected teams significantly. Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi, linked with a major move after an impressive last season, is facing a four-month recovery period following foot surgery. Additionally, Villa’s Amadou Onana is ruled out with a torn ACL, while teammate John McGinn faces a minor knee issue after a preseason match. Fortunately, Newcastle’s Anthony Elanga is expected to return soon after recovering from a troubling tackle.
Managerial Challenges
At Manchester City, new manager Enzo Maresca is navigating early challenges, including integrating players who recently returned from the World Cup. Many key players have only resumed training this week, right before the Community Shield match against Arsenal. Despite being in a transitional phase, City won two of their three preseason fixtures.
Injuries have also marred the preseason for Jack Grealish and James Maddison, both of whom missed extensive time last season and are attempting to regain fitness. Grealish, who was unable to participate in the World Cup due to injury, is currently training in Manchester, while Maddison is sidelined with a hip issue as he looks to bounce back from a long recovery period.
