Djed Spence Completes Transfer from Tottenham to Inter Milan for €30 Million
England defender Djed Spence has finalized his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Inter Milan, marking the end of what he described as a “special chapter” in his four-year career in north London. Spence has signed a five-year contract with the Serie A side, with reports confirming a transfer fee of approximately €30 million.
The 26-year-old is set to replace Denzel Dumfries, who recently joined Real Madrid. During the 2026 World Cup, Spence played in all eight matches for England, starting in both the semifinal loss to Argentina and the third-place playoff victory against France.
Spence departs Tottenham having made 85 appearances, with the club’s Europa League triumph serving as a peak moment in his tenure. ESPN previously reported that head coach Roberto De Zerbi did not consider Spence to be a key part of his future plans, expressing high praise for teammate Pedro Porro, whom he described as the “best in the world” at right-back.
“A special chapter comes to an end. It’s been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I’ll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao,” Spence stated in a social media post shortly before his move was confirmed. He expressed gratitude to the staff, his fellow players, and the fans, stating, “Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart. COYS!!!”
In addition to Spence’s departure, Tottenham has signed former Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer. Robertson is expected to compete with Destiny Udogie for the starting position, contingent on Udogie’s fitness after a challenging preseason.
Spence initially joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in July 2022 for £19 million, a deal that included various performance-related add-ons. His international debut came in September 2025, triggering a £1 million payment to Middlesbrough. After impressing during the World Cup, Tottenham opted to sell him to capitalize on his increased market value. This transfer marks Spence’s second stint in Italy, having previously been on loan at Genoa in 2024.
Spence’s move comes shortly after Spurs announced that their club captain, Cristian Romero, has also transferred to Atlético Madrid.
