Strength Training Linked to Reduced Risk of Early Death, New Study Reveals
A recent study highlights that strength training may contribute to longevity, debunking the common perception that lifting weights primarily enhances appearance. This research analyzed data from three long-term U.S. studies tracking nearly 150,000 health professionals, including nurses, over a period of up to 30 years. Participants reported their time spent on strength training and aerobic activities every few years.
During the three-decade study, nearly 36,000 participants died, providing a basis for researchers to assess the relationship between muscle-strengthening activities and early mortality rates. The findings suggest that engaging in 90 to 120 minutes of strength training weekly—approximately one and a half to two hours—correlates with a 13% reduction in the risk of dying from any cause.
The most significant benefits were observed in decreasing risks associated with cardiovascular disease and neurological conditions, showing 19% and 27% lower risks of death associated with these ailments, respectively. Interestingly, exceeding two hours of weekly strength training did not continue to decrease mortality risk further.
Combining strength training with regular aerobic exercise proved even more beneficial. Participants who completed at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week had a 26% to 43% lower risk of mortality. When strength training was paired with aerobic activity, the risk of death fell by approximately 45%, indicating that the two forms of exercise complement each other effectively.
Muscle’s Role in Health
The underlying mechanism by which strength training may enhance longevity relates to muscle functions beyond mere movement. Skeletal muscle, developed through resistance exercises, is a highly active metabolic tissue. After meals, it absorbs about 80% of glucose from the bloodstream, aiding in blood sugar management and serving as a safeguard against type 2 diabetes, a significant contributor to heart disease and premature death.
Moreover, muscle functions as an organ, releasing myokines into the bloodstream, which help reduce chronic inflammation—a contributing factor in heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Myokines facilitate communication between muscle and vital organs, influencing their health and function.
Regular strength training can also result in lower blood pressure and maintain artery flexibility, further protecting against cardiovascular diseases. Studies indicate that grip strength serves as a reliable health indicator, with one significant international study identifying it as a better predictor of early mortality than blood pressure. Enhanced muscle strength also correlates with a reduced risk of falls, fractures, and frailty in older adults, playing an essential role in overall life quality and longevity.
While the connection between strength training and brain health is less established, it appears plausible that improved metabolic functions may contribute to a decreased risk of dementia, aligning with the study’s 27% reduction in neurological disease mortality.
It’s important to note that the observational nature of the study cannot definitively establish causation between strength training and increased lifespan. Researchers acknowledge that those who engage in strength training may possess other health advantages, although adjustments for various factors, such as diet and smoking, were made in their analysis.
Encouragingly, the levels of strength training associated with lower mortality are reachable without necessitating a gym membership or heavy weights. Just two short sessions per week focusing on major muscle groups, combined with daily aerobic activities, can effectively enhance overall health and longevity.
