Enzo Maresca Delays Finalizing Manchester City Leadership Group Amid Transfer Uncertainty
Enzo Maresca, head coach of Manchester City, has announced that he will postpone finalizing the team’s leadership group until the end of the transfer window. This decision comes following the departure of last season’s captain, Bernardo Silva, with speculation surrounding Rodri as Barcelona considers another offer for the Spanish midfielder. Currently, only Rúben Dias and Erling Haaland remain from the previous leadership group.
“At the moment it is Rúben and Erling, and I want to wait until the end of the transfer window and pick two more,” Maresca stated. Notably, Maresca did not mention Rodri when addressing the captains, which raises questions about the midfielder’s future with the club.
While Haaland is part of the leadership structure, Maresca has expressed doubts about his suitability as captain, citing Haaland’s tendency to engage with the skipper during goal celebrations—activities the striker typically leads. This situation positions Dias as the frontrunner to don the armband, having been a member of the leadership group since 2021.
“Ruben has shown during his time at this club how he is as a player, in terms of leadership,” Maresca remarked. He emphasized that captains are expected to contribute more, not enjoy additional freedom. “It’s important for the captain and the leader to know that the reason they are captain is because I expect more from them,” he added.
If Rodri leaves, City may revisit its interest in Enzo Fernández, who is currently part of the leadership group at Chelsea, even though the London club’s deadline for bids has recently passed. Additionally, Maresca is considering in-house options such as former Crystal Palace captain Marc Guéhi, Josko Gvardiol, and Phil Foden, who has expressed a desire to step into a leadership role.
In a positive development for the team, Maresca has indicated that 18-year-old winger Ryan McAidoo will remain with Manchester City this season after impressing as one of the “real surprises” of preseason. He starred in a recent friendly against Inter Milan, demonstrating skills that have caught the coach’s attention.
“For him the best thing is to stay with us, to learn and be around the first team every day,” Maresca said, encouraging McAidoo to absorb lessons from more experienced teammates like Antoine Semenyo and Jérémy Doku. He stressed that hard work is crucial for young players, warning against complacency that can arise when they feel ready too soon.
