Arteta Highlights Premier League Rivalry Ahead of Community Shield Showdown

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes that the rivalry with Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, along with other new faces in the Premier League, can elevate the team’s performance this season. Arteta and Maresca are set to face each other for the first time in the Community Shield, taking place on Sunday in Cardiff, where Maresca has recently taken the helm, succeeding Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

In a press conference on Friday, Arteta praised Maresca, a former Chelsea head coach, forecasting that he will do an “unbelievable job” during his tenure. With City being one of nine clubs under new management this season, the atmosphere in the league has shifted, prompting assertions that Arsenal may be favoured to defend their Premier League title.

Amidst talk of Arsenal being frontrunners, Arteta chose to downplay such notions, redirecting focus from Maresca during his press briefing. He noted that several exceptional managers, including fellow Basque coach Xabi Alonso, have joined the league, highlighting that his own anticipation is rooted in the variety of coaching styles they bring.

“We know this league is full of incredible managers. It is so challenging every week to prepare games against them. That will elevate our level and my level for sure, and we will try to be better,” said Arteta. He further added that every club has its strengths, referencing how Arsenal has consistently developed over the past four to five years. “You called it stability, but I don’t want to be stable, I want to be better and more ambitious. That is what we want,” he emphasized.

As Arsenal prepares for their clash with City, Arteta is set to make a late decision regarding the fitness of England internationals Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. Both players returned to training this week after a demanding World Cup campaign, which followed a challenging 2025-26 season marred by fitness issues.

New signings Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis are expected to make their competitive debuts against City, who won two of their three matchups last season, notably claiming victory in the Carabao Cup final. Regarding whether City would still be Arsenal’s main competitors for the Premier League title despite Guardiola’s departure, Arteta remarked, “We will have a lot of challengers. Looking at the squads, at the managers and at the clubs they are, but we know that. We need to focus on ourselves and making sure that we maximize every resource we have to give ourselves the best chance.”
