Leicestershire Edges Nottinghamshire by 23 Runs in Metro Bank One-Day Cup Semi-Final

Leicestershire secured a spot in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final with a thrilling 23-run victory over Nottinghamshire in the semi-final held at Grace Road. The win was powered by standout performances from young talents Hamza Shaikh and Alex Green, giving Leicestershire a chance to claim their second title in four years.

Shaikh, a 20-year-old cricketer who recently transferred from Warwickshire, scored 104 runs off 109 balls, marking his second century in the tournament. His innings included a significant 117-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Nick Kelly, who contributed 53 runs. Together, they helped Group A winners Leicestershire post a formidable total of 303 for 7. Dillon Pennington was the pick of the Nottinghamshire bowlers, taking 3 wickets for 65 runs.

In response, Nottinghamshire was bowled out for 280, with Green’s exceptional bowling performance of 4 for 40 leading the way for Leicestershire. Freddie McCann and Haseeb Hameed provided hope for the Outlaws with scores of 64 and 54 respectively, but a lack of substantial partnerships ultimately derailed their chase, with McCann’s crucial run-out proving to be pivotal.

The match began with Leicestershire batting first, losing Rishi Patel early to a delivery from Brett Hutton. The team struggled initially, slipping to 64 for 3 after the stumping of skipper Stephen Eskinazi and a catch off Rehan Ahmed’s edge for 31 runs. Despite Kelly narrowly avoiding a caught-and-bowled chance, he and Shaikh gradually rebuilt the innings, adding runs before Kelly was dismissed by a slower ball from Pennington.

Shaikh accelerated towards his hundred, hitting seven fours and two sixes, including a decisive shot over the leg-side boundary off Olly Stone. He equaled his List A career-best score achieved against Surrey just 23 days prior before being bowled by Patterson-White. The final overs saw strong contributions from Ben Cox and Ian Holland, the latter scoring 29 off 16 balls, propelling the team to a competitive total.

In the Nottinghamshire innings, openers McCann and Ben Martindale made a strong start with a 63-run partnership. However, Martindale was dismissed leg before wicket by Ahmed when he had scored 43, stalling their momentum. Following this, a brief incident saw Leicestershire wicketkeeper Cox leaving the field after being struck on the head by Hameed’s bat. He returned after medical checks, but shortly after, McCann fell victim to a run-out, enforced by stand-in keeper Jonny Tattersall amid confusion with Hameed.

As wickets tumbled, hopes faded for Nottinghamshire, with Hameed and Jack Haynes both getting out in quick succession. When Patterson-White was caught out at deep midwicket, Nottinghamshire was left needing 70 runs from 48 balls. Kyle Verreynne’s presence at the crease gave some hope until he and Farhan Ahmed fell to Green in the closing overs, sealing the victory for Leicestershire.
