Philadelphia Union Overcome Two-Goal Deficit to Edge New York City FC 3-2
In a thrilling match at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night, the Philadelphia Union staged a dramatic comeback to defeat New York City FC 3-2. Bruno Damiani shined with his first two goals of the season, while 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan contributed significantly with two assists.
New York City FC (7-7-5) took an early lead when Bénie Traoré scored a penalty kick in the 4th minute, marking his first goal in four appearances following his acquisition from Swiss club FC Basel 1893. The penalty was awarded after Union midfielder Neil Pierre fouled Andrés Perea.
NYCFC extended their advantage just before halftime with another penalty kick, this time converted by Luighi Hanri Sousa Santos in the second minute of stoppage time, marking his league debut. This penalty was set up by a foul on Union midfielder Indiana Vassilev, leaving NYCFC ahead 2-0 at the break.
The Union (5-10-4) started their comeback three minutes into the second half when Danley Jean Jacques found the back of the net. Cavan Sullivan and defender Kai Wagner each recorded assists on Jacques’ goal, which was his third of the season, matching his total from the previous year. Wagner now has four assists in the current season and 67 in his 208 career appearances.
Sullivan assisted Damiani’s first goal in the 69th minute, leveling the score at 2-2. Sullivan has made a remarkable impact this season with all six of his assists coming in just 17 appearances, including 10 starts— a stark contrast to his limited time over the last two seasons, where he logged just 224 minutes.
Damiani then scored the decisive goal in the 75th minute, with his effort set up by his brother, Quinn Sullivan, who earned his first assist of the season.
Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake made two crucial saves during the match. The Union have now secured four consecutive wins under interim head coach Ryan Richter, who stepped in after the departure of Bradley Carnell in late May. Meanwhile, NYCFC’s goalkeeper Matt Freese also had a pair of saves.
Looking ahead, the Union are set to host Inter Miami CF on Wednesday, while NYCFC will travel to face FC Cincinnati.
