Coach McDonald Urges Labuschagne to Deliver Big Runs Amid Selection Pressure

Australia coach Andrew McDonald has acknowledged that Marnus Labuschagne “needs some big runs” following the team’s disappointing loss to Bangladesh in Darwin. As selectors prepare for a meeting on Monday, both Labuschagne and Jake Weatherald face intense scrutiny ahead of the second Test in Mackay.

In the recent match, Labuschagne scored 1 and 31, marking 42 innings since his last Test century in July 2023, during which he has averaged just 25.32 with nine half-centuries. McDonald noted that despite some improvements in Labuschagne’s game, the need for substantial scores remains critical. “We want runs is the bottom line,” McDonald said. “It’s easy for me to sit here and try to defend that, but ultimately it’s 31. It’s not a big score.” He emphasized that both Labuschagne and the coaching staff recognize the urgency for him to find form.

Labuschagne has struggled recently, having made only 166 runs at an average of 18.44 in his last nine Test innings, failing to convert three scores over 30 into half-centuries. He previously faced demotion from the national team last year against the West Indies, after which he returned to secure his place by scoring five domestic centuries in nine innings during the initial part of the last summer.

With uncertainty surrounding Steven Smith’s future in the team, there is a strong impetus for Labuschagne to regain his form at No. 3. He was recently moved to No. 7 in the batting order against Bangladesh, reflecting selectors’ commitment to including him in their ODI World Cup plans while recognizing his prolonged international struggles.

McDonald addressed the pressure for change following the defeat, acknowledging that public calls for alterations are part of the sport. “A lot of people call for change even when we’re winning… There’s going to be calls on some guys who aren’t performing to the levels that they would like or we would like,” he remarked.

Weatherald also finds himself under the microscope after scores of 23 and 0 in Darwin, bringing his average to 20.36 after 12 Test innings. Following the Ashes, he adjusted his setup but has struggled with decision-making, leading to his dismissal in recent matches.

The selectors face a difficult choice if they decide to alter the batting lineup. With no domestic cricket being played currently, options are limited. Josh Inglis is the only spare batter in the 13-man squad but has limited experience in the top order. Matt Renshaw, who averaged 49.90 in the Sheffield Shield last season, and Cooper Connolly are alternatives that trained with the extended squad in Brisbane.

Calls for injecting youth into the team are present, but viable domestic performers are few. Connolly, despite making an ODI century against Bangladesh recently, has limited experience at the first-class level.

McDonald acknowledged the situation’s complexity, stating, “There’s always going to be calls for change on the back of a loss… It means a lot to them to play for Australia. So let’s not lose that in all this as well.” He reiterated the importance of navigating forward effectively, with the next decision being paramount for the team’s future.
