Sergio Busquets Joins Barcelona’s Coaching Staff for Reserve Team
Former Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has commenced his coaching career at his old club, taking a role with the reserve team, Barça Athletic, competing in Spain’s fourth tier of football. The 38-year-old will work alongside manager Juliano Belletti as he pursues his coaching qualifications.
Barça Athletic, which played in the second division as recently as 2018, has since dropped to the Segunda Federación. Busquets and Belletti are tasked with both returning the team to the third tier and nurturing young talent for Barcelona’s first team.
Busquets, who joined Barcelona as a teenager in 2005, made 25 appearances for the reserve team before advancing to the senior squad under Pep Guardiola. He went on to play 722 matches for the Catalan club, making him the third most-capped player in the club’s history, behind only Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernández. During his illustrious playing career, he won nine LaLiga titles and three Champions League trophies, among numerous other accolades.
As a player, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain, being part of the national team that clinched the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship. In 2023, he joined Inter Miami, where he played alongside former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez, amassing 116 appearances and helping the club win the Leagues Cup and MLS Cup before retiring.
