Disney’s Frozen Emerged from Decades of Development Challenges

An adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1845 fairy tale, The Snow Queen, Disney’s Frozen faced nearly a decade of development hurdles before its release. Initial discussions about the project date back to 1937, when it was briefly considered as a hand-drawn animated feature. The modern development effort began in 2002 but struggled with unsuccessful attempts through 2003, leading to further delays in subsequent years.

The film began to coalesce significantly in 2008 when Christopher Buck, known for directing Tarzan, joined the team. It wasn’t until 2011, following the commercial success of Tangled, that Frozen was officially commissioned. Subsequent to this milestone, Jennifer Lee, initially a screenwriter, was appointed co-director in 2012, marking a historic moment as the first woman to lead a film at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Originally intended to retain the title The Snow Queen, the filmmakers ultimately opted for Frozen instead. Producer Peter Del Vecho explained the rationale for this shift, stating, “because, to us, it represents the movie. Frozen plays on the level of ice and snow but also the frozen relationship, the frozen heart that has to be thawed.” Despite the title change, The Snow Queen continues to be used in international markets.
