Arsenal Invests in Physicality with Declan Rice as Key Midfield Player
Arsenal has emphasized enhancing its squad’s physicality, leading to the decision not to pursue a prominent target last summer, with sources revealing an internal comment from a senior executive stating that “we would break him.” Under manager Mikel Arteta, known for his demanding standards, durability has become crucial in evaluating potential signings. This focus included acquiring Declan Rice, who has proven to be a pivotal figure in the midfield and beyond.
Last season, Arsenal faced significant challenges, culminating in a 63-game campaign that concluded with a UEFA Champions League final defeat, following the club’s first Premier League title in 22 years. Rice played an integral role, participating in 55 matches and starting 49. His importance was highlighted by Arteta, who referred to him as the team’s “heartbeat” or “lighthouse.” Furthermore, Rice has risen to prominence with the England national team, where he was appointed vice-captain by coach Thomas Tuchel.
Across club and country last season, Rice featured in 69 games, accumulating 5,482 minutes on the pitch, ranking him among the top players in Europe’s leagues. Only two players, Manchester City’s Marc Guéhi and Athletic Club’s Unai Simón, surpassed his playing time. Arsenal had also shown serious interest in fellow midfielder Morgan Rogers, who ultimately transferred to Chelsea for £117 million.
Rice’s extensive workload raises ongoing concerns regarding player welfare and sustainability. Following his introduction as a substitute during the Community Shield, sources indicated that Arteta was impressed with Rice’s conditioning after a brief post-World Cup break. Despite this, Rice faced challenges during the World Cup, with fitness issues stemming from an injury that had begun around Christmas in 2025.
Arteta acknowledged Rice’s past performance, stating, “Well, he’s done it previously… Hopefully he doesn’t need to do it that consistently.” The Arsenal manager highlighted the need for a focus on performance quality rather than volume. Nonetheless, Rice’s competitive nature suggests he desires to continue playing extensively, demonstrating his willingness to take on challenges.
The Gunners invested £105 million in Rice from West Ham United in 2023, marking his acquisition as a cornerstone of their strategic success plan. Former technical director Edu Gaspar confirmed that Rice’s signing was crucial to their future ambitions. As a model professional, Rice has consistently maintained a strict approach to his lifestyle and diet, showcasing his commitment to fitness.
Statistically, Rice has been remarkably durable, missing only 14 games due to injury since the 2018-19 season, and he previously participated in 68 games from June 2021 to June 2022, a period he described as “obscene.” Rice is not only accustomed to a heavy workload but thrives on it, expressing his preference for a rhythm of playing three games per week over waiting for matches.
His transition during the World Cup was strategic, attempting to manage his fitness while contending with nerve pain in his hamstring. He reported requiring injections during the latter part of last season, yet maintains that playing frequently is his default mode. Following England’s third-place finish on July 18, Rice remarked, “My body is physically done,” indicating the toll the season took on him.
Arsenal’s midfield has recently gained depth, with the arrivals of new players, such as Bruno Guimarães, and the emergence of talents like Myles Lewis-Skelly. This enhances Arteta’s options compared to last season, where reliance on players like Martín Zubimendi became problematic. Guimarães, who signed for £75 million from Newcastle United, brings extensive Premier League experience and is seen as a key signing for Arteta.
With Martin Ødegaard and other midfielders showing promising form, Arsenal remains focused on maximizing their potentials while avoiding injuries that affected their past efforts. As preparations continue, while Rice is expected to play a vital role, rest may be a necessary consideration for his ongoing performance and well-being.
