Gwyneth Paltrow has recently revisited her early relationship with Brad Pitt, highlighting the complexities of their engagement while they were rising stars of the mid-1990s. The couple, whose romance blossomed on the set of the 1995 thriller Se7en, shared a deep connection that captivated fans and the media alike.
In 1996, while accepting the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for 12 Monkeys, Brad Pitt referred to Gwyneth as his “angel, the love of my life,” further solidifying their bond when he proposed to her later that December. Their fashionable alignment even included matching haircuts, a testament to their close relationship.
Despite their high-profile engagement, Paltrow assured Entertainment Tonight during that period, “I take the institution extremely seriously. There are no divorces in my family either—and in his either, so this is not something—we’ve been together for quite some time, so this is not a rash decision.” However, the couple ended their engagement in June 1997, leading Paltrow to reflect candidly on their split in subsequent interviews.
In 1998, she expressed a sense of inevitability regarding their separation, stating, “When two people aren’t supposed to be together, they’re not supposed to be together.” Years later, in a 2015 conversation with Howard Stern, Paltrow acknowledged her youthful naivety at the time of their relationship, revealing, “I was such a kid, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old… I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.”
The impact of their breakup was felt beyond the two stars, as Paltrow’s father, Bruce, was reportedly “devastated” by the news. Paltrow recalled, “My father loved him like a son,” emphasizing the depth of her feelings for Pitt. Reflecting on their past, she remarked, “I definitely fell in love with him.
