Apple Leaks Details on Upcoming AirPods with Camera in macOS Update

Apple appears to be gearing up for the launch of its new AirPods equipped with a camera, as revealed by a leaked video from the latest macOS 26.7 RC update, according to findings by MacRumors. The video features a user interacting with Siri while holding up a book, utilizing visual information for assistance.

The voiceover within the video states, “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” This suggests a functionality where users can engage with the camera to obtain information about objects in their surroundings.

MacRumors further reports that the camera on these forthcoming AirPods will allow users to analyze items directly in front of them and receive related feedback. Additionally, code found within the software indicates that the AirPods will be capable of notifying users if the camera lens is obstructed, such as by their hair.

Investment in this technology has been a focus for Apple, with Bloomberg noting in May that the company was in the late stages of testing this innovative device. Preliminary descriptions suggest the new AirPods will resemble the AirPods Pro 3 but are expected to feature a longer stem and an LED indicator to show when data is being transmitted to the cloud.

Competitors in the market, such as the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, Looki pendant, and smart glasses from Rokid, already offer similar capabilities. This move could indicate Apple’s strategy to enhance real-world intelligence in its products leading up to the potential release of its own smart glasses in the future.

Bloomberg previously indicated that Apple aimed to release these camera-equipped AirPods in the first half of 2026. With the upcoming launch of an updated Siri set for September, the company may seek to align the release of the new AirPods alongside the corresponding operating system updates.
