Mahipal Lomror’s Shocking Six-Match Deal with Surrey: What’s the Game-Changer Behind This Move?

Mahipal Lomror Joins Surrey on Six-Match Deal for County Championship

Indian batter Mahipal Lomror has signed a six-match contract with Surrey for the remainder of the County Championship season. The 26-year-old left-hand batter, who boasts a first-class career average of 42.62 from 63 matches, will make his debut in Thursday’s home match against Nottinghamshire.

Surrey’s decision to recruit Lomror comes as both Will Jacks and Dan Lawrence are unavailable for their upcoming fixtures. Jacks continues to recover from an ankle injury that has troubled him throughout the English summer, while Lawrence has been called up to the England Test squad for the forthcoming series against Pakistan, commencing August 19.

Surrey’s director of men’s cricket, Alec Stewart, expressed his satisfaction with the addition of Lomror to the squad, stating, “With the busy schedule of international, franchise, and domestic cricket around the world, I’m pleased to add Mahipal Lomror to our available squad of players.” He emphasized the need for a batter capable of bowling spin in light of the absence of Lawrence and Jacks, adding, “We look forward to welcoming him to the dressing room ahead of this week’s match with Nottinghamshire.”

Lomror described the opportunity as a chance to challenge himself in a new environment and gain experience from his new teammates. “I’m happy to join Surrey for the remainder of the season. Playing in the County Championship is a huge opportunity for me to challenge myself in a new environment and learn from an experienced group,” he said.

Notably, Lomror’s first-class career-best score came in November 2024, when he scored an unbeaten 300 for Rajasthan against Uttarakhand. Additionally, he has taken 62 wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin.

Currently, Surrey occupies seventh place in the County Championship standings, accumulating 91 points from eight matches. They have upcoming home games against Yorkshire and Glamorgan, as well as away matches against Essex, Sussex, and Somerset.
