José Mourinho Returns to Real Madrid, Calls It “Like Coming Home”

José Mourinho expressed his joy at returning to Real Madrid, describing it as “like coming home” during his official presentation on Tuesday, marking his first stint with the club in the LaLiga since 2013. Mourinho takes over the managerial role following a significant summer overhaul that included the addition of six new signings: Yan Diomande, Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espí.

Previously, Mourinho managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, where he secured one LaLiga title and one Copa del Rey. Since his departure, he has had spells at various clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, AS Roma, Fenerbahce, and Benfica, before replacing Álvaro Arbeloa at the Bernabéu.

Although he has been overseeing preseason training at Valdebebas since last month, the official presentation, which did not include media access, featured him signing a three-year contract alongside club president Florentino Pérez. In his remarks to Real Madrid TV, Mourinho reflected on the significance of his role, stating, “Real Madrid, from a professional point of view, is the top of a coach’s career.” He added, “Emotionally, it’s more beautiful than the first time I came.”

During his first tenure, Mourinho’s Madrid famously challenged Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, setting LaLiga records for points and goals in the 2011-2012 season. Addressing fans, he asserted, “I’m one of you… working for Real Madrid. That’s what I want everyone at Valdebebas to feel.”

In preparation for the upcoming season, Mourinho’s side has participated in four preseason friendlies. The results include a 2-2 draw with Fiorentina, a 2-1 victory over Ferencváros, a 1-0 win against Deportivo La Coruña, and a 3-0 triumph over Schalke.
