Comcast Introduces Wi-Fi Motion Feature in New Xfinity Gateways

Comcast has launched a new feature called Wi-Fi Motion, enhancing its latest home routers with motion sensing technology that notifies homeowners of detected activity while they are away. This service turns compatible Xfinity gateways into motion sensors by detecting disruptions in the Wi-Fi signal, relaying alerts through the Xfinity app.

First reported by The Verge, the Wi-Fi Motion feature is available for the advanced Xfinity gateways, specifically the XB7 model and those released afterward. This opt-in feature allows users to decide whether to activate it through the Xfinity app, aimed at providing motion detection capabilities and basic security for the users’ homes.

However, enabling Wi-Fi Motion comes with potential privacy implications. Comcast has stated that it may share data generated through the use of this feature with third parties without prior notification to users. According to an Xfinity support page, “Comcast may disclose information generated by your Wi-Fi Motion to third parties without further notice to you in connection with any law enforcement investigation or proceeding, any dispute to which Comcast is a party, or pursuant to a court order or subpoena.”

This warning highlights the necessity for users to carefully consider their privacy preferences before activating the Wi-Fi Motion feature.
