Beyoncé’s Influence on Queen Charlotte’s Hairstyle in Bridgerton

In the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, produced by Shonda Rhimes, the portrayal of Queen Charlotte has drawn significant attention, particularly her visually striking hairstyles. Guyanese-British actress Golda Rosheuvel plays Queen Charlotte, a historical figure thought by some historians to have African ancestry, possibly tracing back to a Portuguese royal lineage, as reported by PBS.

Makeup and hair designer Marc Pilcher, who was responsible for creating Queen Charlotte’s looks, reflected on the impact of her heritage on the character’s styling choices. “When I researched Queen Charlotte and found out that she was of African descent, it gave me so much more scope to create her beautiful looks,” Pilcher told Vogue. He aimed to combine period-appropriate silhouettes with a celebration of her ethnicity, incorporating locks, braids, and Afro-textured hairstyles into the designs.

Notably, Pilcher’s vision for Charlotte’s hair was influenced by Beyoncé’s character Foxxy Cleopatra from the film Austin Powers in Goldmember. He stated, “I saw Beyoncé Knowles in Austin Powers Goldmember and that’s when I thought, ‘That’s what I want.’ I wanted the biggest afro someone had ever seen.” This involved layering multiple wigs to achieve the desired volume, with the final design crafted from four or five wigs that were manipulated to form a striking afro, styled to resemble a Gainsborough wig.

Through these creative choices, Bridgerton not only reimagines historical figures but also emphasizes the importance of representation and cultural identity within its narrative.
