India Aims for Second Round Qualification Against Pakistan in Hockey World Cup
The Indian men’s hockey team is set to face Pakistan at Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Wednesday, with hopes of qualifying for the second round of the Hockey World Cup. Following a successful start to their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Wales, India faced a setback, losing 4-2 to England. This puts their path to the semifinals in jeopardy.
Pakistan, on the other hand, has secured one point from two matches after drawing 3-3 with Wales and suffering a 4-1 defeat earlier in the tournament. Currently, India leads the standings with three points from two games, while Pakistan lags with one. A win for either team today will guarantee advancement to the next phase alongside England, while a draw would suffice for India to progress.
If India qualifies, they will encounter stiff competition in the second round against either the Netherlands or a contender from Argentina or New Zealand. England will also carry forward their three points from their win against India into the next stage.
In their recent match against England, India initially struggled as England broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, thanks to a swift aerial pass that caught the Indian defense off guard, allowing Nicholas Bandurak to score. India responded just two minutes into the second quarter with a powerful penalty corner flick from Harmanpreet that found the top-left corner, leveling the score.
India then took the lead in the 25th minute when Hardik Singh assisted Abhishek for a setup that Dilpreet Singh converted with a simple touch, putting India ahead 2-1. However, England equalized in the 39th minute with a goal by Stuart Rushmere after a long slap-push allowed him a chance inside the circle.
England turned the tide in the 43rd minute when Henry Croft scored to give them a 3-2 lead, marking his first World Cup goal. They later cemented their victory in the 55th minute, with Bandurak scoring again after a goalmouth scramble secured the final score of 4-2.
