Manchester United’s Midfield Faces Uncertainty Ahead of Premier League Opener
As the transfer window approaches its conclusion, questions arise about the adequacy of Manchester United’s midfield. With Casemiro having left the club and Manuel Ugarte recovering from a knee injury, the team has brought in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a combined fee of £85 million. However, the anticipated marquee signing has yet to materialize, and several other targets, including Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes, have moved to different clubs. Additionally, a deal for Atlanta’s Brazilian international Éderson fell through due to issues during his medical examination.
With less than a week remaining before Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Hull City on Saturday, head coach Michael Carrick must decide on his midfield lineup. Choices include Santos, Tielemans, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo. Mason Mount, who has shown promise in central midfield during preseason, has missed the last two matches due to a foot injury. Young prospect Tyler Fletcher, the son of former Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher, remains an exciting option but is still untested at 19 years old.
Regardless of the starting selection, fans are likely to debate the midfield’s readiness for the upcoming season. Carrick has expressed the possibility of acquiring a third midfielder, indicating that players such as Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga from Real Madrid, Alex Scott from Bournemouth, and others have been discussed as potential signings. Additionally, the club is considering a left-back to compete with Luke Shaw, with Myles Lewis-Skelly from Arsenal among the options due to uncertainties regarding his future there.
The transfer deadline is set for September 1, and Carrick has made his desire for further signings known. During an interview at United’s training base in Ireland, he emphasized the significance of the midfield, reflecting on his own experiences as a player. “Being a midfielder, that’s kind of how I’ve seen the game,” he stated. He believes that a well-balanced midfield is vital for the team’s overall performance.
Carrick remains optimistic about the existing midfield, highlighting that Fernandes is expected to start whenever available, with Santos serving as the team’s sole recognized defensive midfielder. Mainoo demonstrated effectiveness alongside Casemiro last season, while Tielemans has versatility, having played various midfield roles during his time at Leicester and Villa.
In discussions about expectations, Tielemans mentioned Carrick’s structured approach, noting, “He wants to have the ball, he wants to press in certain ways,” pointing out the logical principles within Carrick’s system. He added that the midfield must work cohesively to harness offensive qualities in the final third of the pitch.
Despite the technical abilities present in the squad, fans express concerns over the midfield’s physicality and athleticism, recalling criticisms aimed at past teams led by both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim for lacking pace. Carrick, who was part of what many fans regard as United’s last great midfield during their 2008 Champions League victory alongside Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, is aware of the weight of expectations.
Since then, the club has invested over £600 million in central midfielders with limited success, with only Fernandes widely viewed as a successful signing since his arrival from Sporting CP in January 2020. Many supporters are left wondering if Santos and Tielemans can eventually contribute effectively, especially as the new season commences.
