Matt Renshaw Set to Open for Australia in Second Test Against Bangladesh

Matt Renshaw, who boasts impressive first-class scores of 170 and 135 at Mackay, is expected to open the batting for Australia in the second Test against Bangladesh. This match marks the first time the venue will host men’s Tests, becoming the 12th ground in Australia to do so. Renshaw’s recall comes at a crucial time for the Australian Test side, which is navigating a challenging phase.

Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey indicated Renshaw’s position in the lineup, stating, “Renners is in a really good place mentally and his cricket is showing that.” He highlighted Renshaw’s recent experience in international white-ball formats and his personal developments, including his new family, which have prepared him for this opportunity. Carey expressed optimism about seeing Renshaw perform alongside Travis Head.

Reflecting on his journey into international cricket at a young age, Renshaw remarked, “I look back at photos of myself ten years ago and see a little baby playing Test cricket….but hopefully this time getting the opportunity, I’ll be in a lot better mindset and a lot better frame.”

Renshaw’s path back into the Test squad has not been straightforward. He shifted to the middle order for Queensland during the Covid era and, despite not scoring a first-class hundred since 2018, found success by returning to the opener position, achieving notable scores early in 2023. He recorded three centuries in the previous Sheffield Shield season, averaging 49.90, a figure that places him among the top run-scorers. However, with overall averages of 24.93 in 2023-24 and 29.17 in 2024-25, other players had been prioritized ahead of him.

Alex Carey praised Renshaw’s ability to adapt his game, saying, “He got the balance between attack and defence…so for him to score three hundreds last season [shows] he has got the game for all conditions.” Renshaw was recalled after previously debuting in ODIs and T20Is, including a recent stint for the T20 World Cup, although his performances there were mixed, including two ducks against Bangladesh in June.

Renshaw’s selection means Jake Weatherald, a teammate of Carey’s at South Australia, has been dropped from the squad. Carey noted the difficulty of such decisions, having reached out to Weatherald to extend support and encouragement for his return to form.

As Renshaw prepares for his upcoming match, Carey is poised to play his 50th Test match, reaffirming his role as a key player behind the stumps since replacing Tim Paine in 2021. Carey has established himself as a world-class wicketkeeper, averaging 47.93 in 2025, the second-highest after Steven Smith. He emphasized a focus on his process and continuous improvement as he approaches this personal milestone.
