South Africa Announces Revised Women’s Squad for Tour of Zimbabwe

South Africa has unveiled a new-look women’s squad for their inaugural tour to Zimbabwe, featuring ten changes from the team that participated in the T20 World Cup in England earlier this year. The tour includes a five-match series set to take place in Bulawayo from September 11 to 19. The squad will see captain Laura Wolvaardt, allrounder Annerie Dercksen, wicket-keepers Sinalo Jafta and Karabo Meso, along with middle-order batter Kayla Reyneke, making the trip across the border.

The decision to implement significant changes aims to identify and fast-track new talent, particularly focusing on the next generation of fast bowlers. Notable veteran players such as Shabnim Ismail, Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Tumi Sekhukhune, and Nadine de Klerk have been rested, in addition to Tazmin Brits, Sune Luus, Chloe Tryon, and Nonkululekho Mlaba. There is currently no confirmation regarding the future of Ismail and van Niekerk, although head coach Mandla Mashimbyi stated that they remain in contention for future selections.

“As it stands, everybody that was involved in the T20 World Cup is still available for selection for this team,” Mashimbyi said. He also noted ongoing discussions with van Niekerk regarding her playing status.

Wolvaardt has chosen not to rest for this series, with Mashimbyi remarking, “Go and ask Laura not to play for her country. It will be a big fight.” He emphasized that her leadership of a younger team provides an opportunity to evaluate her leadership capabilities. “The option was there for her to rest but she declined,” he added.

New inclusions to the squad comprise experienced batter Anneke Bosch, who missed the T20 World Cup, and Faye Tunnicliffe, the top run-scorer for South Africa A against Bangladesh A. Additional players include allrounders Miane Smit and Eliz-Mari Marx, offspinner Nondumiso Shangase, legspinner Seshnie Naidu, and seamer Ayanda Hlubi.

Mashimbyi expressed his excitement about the tour, stating, “Firstly, and most importantly, we’re preparing for our first trip as a team to our African neighbours, which is something very special to be a part of.” The selection of a youthful and ambitious squad aims to grant international opportunities to emerging players. Nthabiseng Nini, Luyanda Nzuza, and Caitlin Wyngaard are noteworthy young talents that the team has monitored for the past 12-18 months.

This tour is vital as it aligns with preparations for the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy scheduled for February next year. The team anticipates eight matches, including T20I fixtures against India in December, to refine their strategies for the upcoming competition.

The series against Zimbabwe marks a significant moment as relations between the two boards strengthen, with plans to co-host the men’s ODI World Cup in 2027 alongside Namibia. Zimbabwe’s women’s team is currently in development, having yet to win a T20I this year, facing defeats against UAE, and losing all four matches in the T20 World Cup qualifiers, as well as encounters against New Zealand and Pakistan.
