Mourinho Defends Vinícius Júnior Amid Prestianni Controversy

José Mourinho addressed the controversy surrounding former player Gianluca Prestianni, who was accused of racially abusing Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior during a Champions League match last season. Mourinho, currently in his second spell at Real Madrid, stated that Prestianni should be considered innocent until proven guilty, but emphasized that if found guilty, “it’s over” for him. Prestianni ultimately received a six-match suspension for anti-gay conduct.

In light of Vinícius’s choice to remain at Real Madrid despite transfer speculation, Mourinho affirmed his loyalty to the player. “The answer is very simple: Prestianni was my player. That’s it, there’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player… 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he remarked to Spanish outlet AS, underscoring his commitment to standing by Vinícius.

Mourinho’s Call for Fair Treatment

Mourinho criticized how players and officials interact with Vinícius, arguing that changes are necessary in the treatment he receives on the pitch. “I think people have to learn how to behave toward him, and I’m talking about referees too,” Mourinho noted. He highlighted the inconsistency in officiating, saying, “You can’t give a penalty if it’s Pedrerol… and then not give the penalty because it’s Vinícius.”

He further explained that perceptions of Vinícius should not cloud judgments made on the field. “People have to look beyond whether they find him likable or not. On the field, you have to look at Vinícius like any other player — he’s better than the others,” he added.

Fan Behavior Under Scrutiny

Mourinho acknowledged that Vinícius’s goal celebrations, particularly in front of opposing fans, may contribute to heightened tensions. However, he expressed confusion over why fans often boo Vinícius without any apparent reason. “They don’t respect him in stadiums,” he said, emphasizing the need for a more balanced approach in fan reactions. “But what sense does it make for an entire stadium to boo one of the best players in the world when you have nothing against him?”

Through his comments, Mourinho continues to advocate for fair treatment of Vinícius Júnior, stressing that watching the Brazilian play should be regarded as a privilege.
