Could Baleba Be the Game-Changing Secret to Filling Casemiro’s Massive Shoes at Man United?

Manchester United Eyes Brighton’s Carlos Baleba Amidst Revised Transfer Fee Talks

Carlos Baleba, the Brighton midfielder, has reportedly caught the attention of Manchester United once again, as Brighton may be willing to accept a lower fee for the 22-year-old following previous summer interest. Initial attempts to acquire Baleba saw Brighton holding out for around £100 million, but current sources suggest United believes a figure of approximately £60 million could now suffice.

Baleba joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for an initial £24 million and has since made 92 appearances for the club. His performances in the Premier League have garnered a solid fanbase, highlighting his combative style, stamina, and passing ability. However, the ongoing search for a midfield partner to complement Bruno Fernandes raises questions about how Baleba would fit into the squad, especially after United spent £85 million on two midfielders this summer: Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Player Profile and Strengths

Primarily a defensive midfielder, Baleba excels in tactical awareness, anticipating situations, and maintaining positional discipline. While he can be seen as a direct replacement for Casemiro, he lacks the Brazilian’s scoring instinct and ability to make late runs into the box.

His physicality and stamina stand out in modern football, particularly within the Premier League, where Baleba has proven himself difficult to contend with. During the 2024-25 season, he was among the few midfielders to reach speeds exceeding 34 km/h and ranked joint-sixth for combined tackles and interceptions. With the ball at his feet, Baleba demonstrates effective carrying ability and maintains balance in physical encounters.

Areas for Improvement

Despite his strengths, Baleba’s 2025-26 season was challenging, marked by uncertainty surrounding his future and multiple first-half substitutions. An ankle ligament injury during the summer has further complicated his recovery. Additionally, his passing consistency remains a concern; he shows potential but often overhits or underhits passes at critical moments. While he does not bring significant goal-scoring threat and struggles with crossing, these shortcomings align with the defensive focus of his role.

Potential Fit at Manchester United

Should Baleba join United, he would theoretically slot alongside Tielemans in a 4-2-3-1 formation, fulfilling a crucial need for an athletic and imposing midfielder. With Santos already signed, adding Baleba could provide the depth United seeks. The club’s long-standing interest in Baleba strengthens the likelihood of a deal that meets their needs just as they move into the new season.
