New Finnish Study Links Regular Coffee Consumption to Improved Body Composition and Hormonal Profiles
Research from Finland indicates that regular coffee consumption is associated with healthier body composition and favorable metabolic markers, as well as distinct sex hormone patterns in men and women. This study, conducted by researchers at the University of Oulu, involved an analysis of data from 2,264 participants aged 46, part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, exploring the relationship between coffee intake and various biological indicators.
Coffee Drinkers Show Enhanced Body Metrics
Participants who consumed more coffee exhibited lower levels of total and visceral body fat, alongside increased skeletal muscle mass. Notably, these differences were observed despite similar body mass index (BMI) scores across varying coffee consumption levels. Additionally, higher coffee intake correlated with reduced circulating concentrations of branched-chain amino acids in both sexes, which have been linked to insulin resistance and a heightened risk of type 2 diabetes when chronically elevated.
Differing Hormonal Patterns Associated with Coffee Intake
The study revealed pronounced differences in hormonal responses, particularly among men. Increased coffee consumption was linked to an improved glucose-insulin profile and higher concentrations of total and bioavailable testosterone, along with greater levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). Conversely, measures of free testosterone and the free androgen index were modestly lower in these individuals.
For women, the effects of higher coffee consumption were less extensive, primarily associated with elevated SHBG and decreased free androgens. “Coffee is consumed by millions of people every day, yet we still know surprisingly little about how it relates to our metabolism and hormones,” said Luca Verroest, the study’s lead author and doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu. He emphasized that the study revealed a distinct hormonal signature persistently observed, regardless of BMI and lifestyle factors.
Implications for Future Research
These findings imply that hormonal pathways might elucidate the previously noted connections between coffee consumption and metabolic health. However, as this research was observational, it cannot confirm that coffee intake directly causes these biological changes. Finland’s status as one of the world’s highest coffee-consuming nations, with an average of about 11.8 kilograms (26 pounds) per person annually, enriches the relevance of these findings.
The researchers indicate that their results may set the stage for future investigations aimed at determining the specific biological effects of coffee and identifying responsible compounds. Current studies employing animal models are underway, with aspirations to progress toward human intervention trials. Additional research will be required before these insights can inform dietary recommendations.
