Meghan Markle Advocates for Mandatory Paid Parental Leave

In an October 2021 letter to then-House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer, Meghan Markle expressed her strong support for mandatory paid parental leave in the United States. Reflecting on her own experience as a new mother during the COVID-19 pandemic, she shared feelings of joy and overwhelming challenges when her daughter was born amidst unprecedented disruptions in healthcare and education.

Markle noted, “Like fewer parents, we weren’t confronted with the harsh reality of either spending those first few critical months with our baby or going back to work.” She highlighted the importance of being able to take her daughter home and spend quality time with her family during that vital early stage. This, she stated, allowed her to avoid the difficult decisions about childcare, work, and medical care that many families face daily.

She concluded her letter with a poignant reminder that “no family should be faced with these decisions.” Markle emphasized that families should not have to choose between earning a living and caring for their child or loved ones, advocating for a comprehensive paid leave plan to alleviate these burdens.
