Amazon Introduces Free AI Upgrade Alexa+ for Fire TV Devices
Amazon has announced that its AI assistant, Alexa+, will be available for free on all compatible Fire TV devices in the United States, regardless of whether users have an Amazon Prime subscription. The update, which includes features like conversational search, smart home controls, and AI-driven content recommendations, aims to enhance the user experience across various television platforms.
Previously, access to Alexa+ was priced at $19.99 per month for those without a Prime membership and was initially launched with new Fire TV devices last fall. Now, the company is rolling out the upgrade automatically to all eligible devices, eliminating the need for users to download an app or enroll in a subscription service.
Compatible devices include the current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and select third-party TVs with built-in Alexa+, such as those from Hisense and Panasonic.
Growing Adoption of AI Features
This initiative aligns with a broader trend in the consumer electronics industry, where companies are increasingly integrating AI functionalities into their products. For example, earlier this year, Google launched Gemini for its Google TV platform, which transformed traditional search capabilities into AI-based conversational interfaces, while Roku also upgraded its voice assistant to incorporate AI last year.
Amazon claims that users of Alexa+ have experienced nearly double the interaction on Fire TV compared to the original Alexa, indicating a shift from passive viewing to active engagement with the AI. The nature of this interaction remains a topic of debate among consumers and industry experts alike.
Enhanced User Experience
The Alexa+ upgrade allows users to request show recommendations using broader queries such as themes, age ratings, or popularity, rather than by specific titles. For instance, users can ask for “a top-rated thriller” or “a historical drama with a strong female lead.” Moreover, Alexa+ can facilitate smart home management, enabling users to view feeds from their Ring cameras directly on their television screens.
This update illustrates Amazon’s commitment to enhancing the functionality of its media devices through advancements in AI technology.
