Gloucestershire Struggles Against Worcestershire as Rain Washes Out Play

On the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship Second Division match at Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire ended at 107 for 5 before rain interrupted play in the afternoon. Worcestershire’s Ben Allison excelled with the ball, taking three wickets for just 15 runs in 14 overs.

Gloucestershire’s innings got off to a rocky start after winning the toss. Allison made early inroads, dismissing Cameron Bancroft for 2, caught off a thin edge by former Gloucestershire wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick. Joe Phillips followed shortly after, bowled for 9 by Matthew Waite, leaving Gloucestershire at 28 for 4 after just 11 runs had been scored. Allison then struck twice in quick succession, removing Miles Hammond and James Bracey, both caught in the slips, to claim figures of 3 for 5 from his first 6.5 overs.

Tommy Boorman, stepping up to anchor the innings, and Ollie Price helped stabilize the team with a crucial partnership. After a sluggish start, they reached lunch at 55 for 4, with Boorman not out on 19 and Price contributing 31. However, Allison had bowled nine overs, with seven of them maidens, highlighting his effectiveness on a pitch offering movement.

The afternoon saw Boorman and Price extend their partnership to 75 runs before Price was bowled by Waite for 31, making the score 103 for 5. Boorman, however, remained resolute, reaching his maiden first-class half-century without the loss of composure, hitting nine fours in the process. He was unbeaten on 51 when rain brought a premature end to play at 3:25 PM.

Matthew Waite finished the day with bowling figures of 2 for 25 from 7.4 overs, as Worcestershire’s bowling attack delivered a commendable performance overall.
