Crawley Returns with 81 as Kent Ends Day One at 299 for 6 Against Middlesex

Kent reached 299 for 6 on a rain-affected opening day of their County Championship match against Middlesex at Merchant Taylors’ School. Zak Crawley marked his return to first-class cricket, scoring his first half-century of the season with a solid 81 runs, while Sam Northeast contributed with a top-score of 87.

Crawley, who had been dropped from England’s Test side following the Ashes, took a break from red-ball cricket in June after struggling throughout the summer. With just 226 runs at an average of 20.54 from his first 12 innings, his form had raised concerns. However, after leading Sunrisers Leeds in the Hundred, he regained form against Middlesex.

He opened the batting after Ben Compton’s dismissal for 13, and formed a crucial partnership with Northeast, putting on 142 runs for the second wicket. Crawley showed patience despite his aggressive start; he hit eight fours, including a notable straight drive off Toby Roland-Jones and a pull shot off Tom Helm that highlighted his shot-making ability.

After lunch, he began scoring more freely, exploiting some wayward bowling from Eathan Bosch. However, as he approached a century, Crawley fell into familiar habits, driving at a wide delivery from Ryan Higgins and getting caught at slip, which marked Higgins’ return to the action after a two-month injury layoff.

Middlesex fought back, led by Roland-Jones who took 3 wickets for 70 runs. His excellent spell, along with contributions from Helm (2 for 57), kept Kent on their toes. Tawanda Muyeye edged Roland-Jones to slip without settling, while captain Bell-Drummond struggled and was caught by wicketkeeper Joe Cracknell for a duck.

Northeast, who has had success against Middlesex in recent seasons, displayed resilience after an early scare and reached his half-century with a series of well-placed boundaries, including a dismissive drive past the bowler’s end off Bosch. However, following the tea break, he was dismissed lbw by Roland-Jones.

Helm soon bowled Chris Benjamin for 27, while Ekansh Singh was dropped by Higgins before rain interrupted play for the second time. The players resumed after a brief delay, and Kent moved closer to a second batting point before the day’s play concluded.
