Josh Thomas Leads Somerset to Strong Position Against Essex with Century

Josh Thomas scored a remarkable 110 runs as Somerset took control on the first day of the Rothesay County Championship First Division match against Essex in Taunton. Batting first after being put in to bat, Somerset reached 348 for 5, with Thomas hitting 15 fours and a six in his innings from 162 balls.

New overseas signing Henry Nicholls also made a significant contribution, scoring 96 on his debut. The duo shared a third-wicket partnership of 119 runs, which set the platform for Somerset’s strong total. Tom Abell added 65 runs, forming a 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Nicholls, while James Rew finished the day not out on 21.

Essex’s bowlers struggled throughout the day, with Sam Cook and Shane Snater being the pick, each taking two wickets, with figures of 2 for 77 and 2 for 68, respectively. Essex captain Tom Westley may second-guess his decision to bowl first on a flat batting surface.

Thomas, despite having six different opening partners this season, anchored the innings well. His opening partner, Tom Lammonby, faced an unfortunate dismissal; a delivery from Cook deflected off Lammonby’s thigh pad onto the stumps. Lewis Goldsworthy also faced disappointment when he edged a delivery from Porter, resulting in a catch by Michael Pepper at slip with the score at 94 for 2.

After surviving an early challenge from the swinging new ball, Thomas reached his half-century in 75 balls, supported by Nicholls, who effectively utilized sweeps against Simon Harmer’s offspin as Somerset went into lunch at 134 for 2. Essex’s missed chance when Nicholls was dropped on 43 proved costly, as the pair went on to surpass 100 runs in their partnership off 185 balls.

Thomas reached his century in 148 balls with an elegant shot behind point, celebrating his second first-class hundred. Nicholls, steady in his approach, reached 50 from 120 balls before Snater ended Thomas’s innings. By tea, the score had progressed to 248 for 3, with Abell joining Nicholls in solidifying the lead.

As the day progressed, Nicholls and Abell continued to accumulate runs, securing two batting bonus points during the final session. Nicholls, who was engaging with the home crowd, fell just four runs short of a century, chopping a Cook delivery onto his stumps at 313 for 4.

Looking to bolster Somerset’s position, Abell, returning from injury, displayed confidence and composure, crafting a flawless half-century from 81 balls before being bowled by Snater shortly before the end of the day’s play. Somerset ended the day well-placed and satisfied with their performance.
