Barcelona Faces Urgent Need for Striker as Transfer Window Closes

With less than two weeks remaining in the summer transfer window, FC Barcelona’s hopes of signing Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez appear to have collapsed. The club has also parted ways with veteran forward Robert Lewandowski, who signed with Chicago Fire following the expiration of his contract, and has allowed Ferran Torres to transfer to Paris Saint-Germain for €50 million.

Despite securing the arrivals of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for €70 million and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund for €22 million, Barcelona is still in desperate need of additional attacking options. If they do not secure at least one more forward soon, they may have to rely on youth players or untested options for their attacking role until January. With ambitions to clinch a third consecutive LaLiga title, the urgency for reinforcements cannot be overstated.

Besides Álvarez, Barcelona’s pursuit of other targets this summer has been unsuccessful. Harry Kane remains committed to Bayern Munich, João Pedro has extended his contract with Chelsea until 2032, and potential signing Junior Kroupi from AFC Bournemouth fell through due to a broken metatarsal injury.

Identifying Barcelona’s Requirements

Barcelona needs a striker who not only can score but can contribute creativity and assist the midfield, aligning with manager Hansi Flick’s high-tempo, pressing style of play. Last season, Lewandowski and Torres combined for 30 LaLiga goals, setting a benchmark for any replacement. While the new forward does not have to replicate that output, attaining at least 15 goals and assists is essential. Furthermore, players must possess speed and the ability to press effectively in order to fit into the club’s attacking scheme.

A standout option was Julián Álvarez, noted for his scoring ability and proficiency in set pieces, although his transfer fee of €200 million remains prohibitively high.

Potential Alternatives

Among the candidates, Mikel Oyarzabal of Real Sociedad seems a straightforward choice. As Spain’s starting striker, he has scored 15 goals in 30 LaLiga appearances last season and demonstrated compatibility with Barcelona’s core players. However, Oyarzabal’s age (29) and a release clause of €75 million poses a challenge.

Another possibility is Lautaro Martínez from Inter Milan, who has consistently achieved over 20 goals annually. However, he has not typically operated as a sole striker in his club’s setup, complicating his adaptation to Barcelona’s demands. While versatile, questions linger regarding his off-the-ball pressing capability.

Manchester City’s Marmoush, known for his technical skills, has reportedly engaged in advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur, reducing Barcelona’s options further.

Looking Towards Emerging Talents

In search of a more cost-effective solution, Barcelona might consider Georges Mikautadze, currently with Villarreal. The 25-year-old had a commendable season in LaLiga last year, scoring 13 goals and making six assists. His recent release clause increased from €60 million to €76 million as of mid-August, but he promises potential long-term value.

Another name worth exploring is Esposito, who has performed well during his time at Cagliari. Despite past issues including a contract dispute, his ability to play as a creative forward may fit Barcelona’s needs, although concerns about his discipline could hinder advancement.

Younger prospects like 21-year-old Fernandez-Pardo, who had a breakout season with Lille and made Belgium’s World Cup squad, and 22-year-old Tresoldi of Club Brugge may also pique Barcelona’s interest despite being higher risk. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Hamza Abdelkarim, who has impressed during the preseason, could also be in line for first-team action as a last-minute resort.
