Starcloud Secures $250 Million Funding Extension, Valuing Company at $2.3 Billion
Starcloud, a startup specializing in satellites for AI inference in orbit, has announced a $250 million extension to its Series A funding round, which initially raised $170 million in March. This latest injection values the company at $2.3 billion and will enable it to expand its manufacturing capabilities and advance its Starcloud-3 spacecraft, designed to launch aboard SpaceX’s upcoming Starship rocket.
Focus on Launch Capacity
CEO Philip Johnston emphasized the need for securing launch capacity amidst rising market constraints. “We can see what’s coming—we’re going to need to book an enormous amount of launch,” he remarked. Starcloud has requested permission from the FCC to operate 88,000 satellites.
Johnston noted that one of the significant costs is in securing launch contracts, particularly as SpaceX’s Falcon 9 program is set to conclude in 2028. The shift towards the larger, yet unproven Starship complicates planning for satellite operators, especially given that competing rockets currently lack regular flight schedules.
Upcoming Launch Plans
In the near term, Starcloud is focused on launching two of its new 8 kW compute satellites, known as Starcloud-2, during rideshare missions planned for 2027. These satellites are expected to conduct inference tasks for various clients, including U.S. government agencies. The company is also exploring the purchase of dedicated Falcon 9 launches and contracting other providers to support future missions.
Investment and Technology Development
The $250 million extension was led by Manhattan West Ventures, with notable participation from Nvidia, which contributed $25 million, and Cisco. Other investors included Benchmark, EQT, and Standard Capital. Johnston pointed out that Nvidia’s investment signifies confidence in Starcloud’s technology, which utilizes the Nvidia H100 GPU in orbit—an innovation not widely adopted in the space sector.
Starcloud is collaborating with Nvidia as the latter develops its first dedicated space GPU, the Vera Rubin Space-1 chip, which is expected to launch in late 2028. Johnston’s team is focused on design aspects critical to the chip’s performance in space conditions, including thermal management and radiation shielding.
With a workforce of 25 and plans for growth, Starcloud is establishing production operations in a 100,000-square-foot facility located in Woodinville, Washington, a region known for satellite manufacturing for major companies like SpaceX and Amazon.
