MercurySteam Confirmed as Developer of Metroid Ravenous After Nintendo Direct
- MercurySteam, known for Metroid Dread, appears to be the developer of Metroid Ravenous showcased in Nintendo Direct.
- The studio confirmed its involvement by retweeting the Ravenous trailer with emojis, generating buzz around the release.
- Metroid Ravenous is set to launch exclusively for Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
Spanish studio MercurySteam, the team behind Metroid Dread, is reportedly the developer of Metroid Ravenous, which was prominently featured in the recent Nintendo Direct showcase. Despite evident visual similarities between the two games, MercurySteam’s name was notably absent from the Ravenous trailer and the associated press materials, raising questions about the studio’s involvement.
Attempts to obtain clarification from both Nintendo and MercurySteam on this matter were made; however, no response was received. This lack of communication is typical for Nintendo, which has a history of not disclosing developer details until close to a game’s launch.
Speculation regarding MercurySteam’s involvement appears to have been resolved when the studio retweeted the Metroid Ravenous trailer, accompanied by a ninja emoji and a heart emoji, suggesting a stealthy development process. The same trailer was also shared on LinkedIn shortly thereafter.
Metroid Ravenous seems to align closely with the gameplay style of Metroid Dread, offering a side-scrolling adventure that utilizes varying perspectives. The game is characterized by a more vibrant aesthetic compared to Dread, showcasing dynamic and energetic gameplay that stood out during the Direct presentation.
Metroid Dread, released in 2021, received significant acclaim, earning a golden Essential badge in a Eurogamer review, where it was described as “a stylish, visually sumptuous return for 2D Metroid.” Following Dread, MercurySteam developed an original title, Blades of Fire, which, despite receiving decent reviews, ultimately faced financial challenges that led to recent company restructuring and layoffs.
Looking ahead, Metroid Ravenous is scheduled for release exclusively on Switch 2 on January 28, 2027.
