Netflix has formed a new partnership with Sega to develop a variety of projects, including an animated series based on Sonic the Hedgehog and film adaptations of Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven.
The partnership is set to kick off with a feature-film version of Crazy Taxi, a classic arcade racing game from Sega. The screenplay will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who recently worked on the reboot of The Naked Gun. Notably, producers Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara from Sega, known for producing the live-action Sonic films, are also attached to this project; however, it remains unclear whether the adaptation will be animated or live-action.
In contrast, the Sonic Netflix series is described by Sega as “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded,” targeting children who desire a sense of adventure and camaraderie. Viewers can expect to see an abundance of characters from the Sonic universe. Toru Nakahara and animation director Carlos Stevens are involved in this series.
Additionally, a film adaptation of Stranger Than Heaven is in the works. This action game developed by RGG Studio is scheduled to be released on January 15, 2024, but Sega is proactively launching the film adaptation early.
“Expect something cute yet cool for Sonic, hilariously crazy for Crazy Taxi and a badass action drama for Stranger Than Heaven, because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started,” Nakahara stated in an announcement.
Netflix has previously obtained rights to numerous high-profile video games, including Castlevania, Cyberpunk, and Devil May Cry, and plans to adapt additional titles like Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed, and Crash Bandicoot.
