Marvel’s Wolverine Defies the Odds: How It Sold 1.9 Million on PS5 Despite Backlash!

Date:

Marvel’s Wolverine Sells Nearly 2 Million Copies in Initial Launch

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Marvel’s Wolverine has sold approximately 1.9 million copies within its first three days.
  • 22.9% of sales were physical copies, contributing to over $130 million in revenue.
  • The game has quickly surpassed several other major PlayStation titles in sales figures.

Marvel’s Wolverine has generated considerable attention amidst mixed reviews and internet discussions in recent days. Despite the polarized reception, a report has revealed that the game, developed by Insomniac Games, has sold almost 2 million copies, with over a fifth attributed to physical sales.

According to Alinea Analytics’ Rhy Elliot, Marvel’s Wolverine moved around 1.9 million copies in just its first three days, significantly boosting PlayStation’s revenue. This figure includes one million copies from digital pre-orders made before the game’s official launch. In total, the action game has garnered more than $130 million in earnings thus far.

While Sony plans to cease the production of disc-based games for PlayStation by 2028, demand for physical editions of Marvel’s Wolverine remains strong. The report noted that 22.9% of its sales stemmed from physical copies.

The physical-to-digital sales ratio for Marvel’s Wolverine is somewhat different from that of other recent PS5 titles. A prior report by Alinea Analytics found that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had 35% of its revenue from physical sales, whereas Astro Bot saw about 46%, and Ghost of Yotei had a physical sales share of 37.6%.

It’s important to note that Marvel’s Wolverine is still in its early release phase, and the impact of the upcoming holiday season may influence its sales distribution in the coming weeks and months.

The game’s early performance has positioned it ahead of several other PlayStation Studios releases this year, with its 1.9 million sales eclipsing games like Saros, Marathon, and Marvel Tokon. A substantial number of players who purchased Wolverine previously engaged with Marvel’s Spider-Man (82%) and Spider-Man 2 (70%). Furthermore, 43% of Wolverine players had also played Marvel Rivals, indicating a notable overlap among fans.

While it is still early in the game’s lifespan, the discourse surrounding it does not seem to have significantly hindered its sales. Online gaming forums often feature discussions that critique elements such as the game’s ‘fart scent’ trail and its hand-holdy design. Notably, Eurogamer’s review of Wolverine described the game as “just fine.”
