Massive GTA 5 Source Code Leak Suggests Scrapped Liberty City DLC
- A leak of nearly 200GB reveals the source code of GTA 5 and shows evidence of a scrapped Liberty City DLC.
- The leaked files include unused assets, cut dialogues, and a rough version of GTA 6’s map.
- Fans speculate whether the Liberty City content could be repurposed for a future GTA 6 expansion.
Rockstar Games has experienced a significant leak, reportedly involving around 192GB of previously inaccessible files related to Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5). This leak suggests that the developer began work on a Liberty City DLC before ultimately scrapping it, along with very early materials associated with Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6).
Fans have been actively examining these files, uncovering a plethora of content that was cut from the final version of GTA 5. Among the discoveries are unused dialogue, discarded missions, and various assets. A notable item is what appears to be an early, rough version of the map for GTA 6 and ambitious plans for GTA 5 DLC, including several files connected to Liberty City. YouTuber TJGM shared an outline of the proposed Liberty City DLC’s shoreline, indicating a playable area larger than the version seen in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Following the post, TJGM clarified, “This isn’t a screenshot included in the leak. This is data viewed in CodeWalker and then screenshotted after. It also includes many other Rockstar tools, source code and other things that are legit and easily verifiable.”
Speculation has arisen that the Liberty City content may have been delayed for potential future use in a GTA 6 expansion; however, concrete evidence supporting this theory remains absent.
As interest in Liberty City revives, fans reference a screenshot of the locale within GTA 5’s engine that was reportedly found in a Rockstar artist’s portfolio a decade ago, suggesting that the DLC may have been more developed than previously known.
There has been ongoing discussion about other planned DLCs for GTA 5 that did not materialize. Notably, Trevor Philips’ voice actor, Steven Ogg, disclosed details about an intended “James Bond Trevor” DLC, where Trevor would have operated undercover for the government. Although some materials related to this “Agent Trevor” story have surfaced in the most recent leak, the specifics of their extent have not been clarified.
Joseph Rubino, a former senior camera artist and digital cinematographer at Rockstar, discussed the Agent Trevor DLC, stating, “We split our teams into two, so I stayed on GTA Online and then this DLC, which Steven Ogg was a very important part of, and then some of the team overlapped and went to [Red Dead Redemption 2] early on. When GTA Online came out, it was so much of a cash cow and people were loving it so much that it was hard to make an argument that a standalone DLC would out-compete that… Looking back now I would say that you could probably do both, but that was a business decision that they made and I was a little upset about that.”
