Microsoft has filed a patent for a system that integrates advertisements into PC and Xbox games, designed to minimize disruption to gameplay. This patent, published on September 3 in the United States, introduces a “context aware” system that utilizes an “ad credit” framework to display ads based on identified “trigger events” during gameplay.
According to the patent details, when an advertisement is triggered, the game pauses temporarily, a method reminiscent of how many free-to-play mobile games currently operate. Advertisements are displayed during periods recognized as downtime, such as loading screens, end-of-round transitions, or after completing a mission or quest. This approach aims to prevent interference with active gameplay.
The ad credit system effectively grants players predetermined periods of ad-free gameplay. Upon the expiration of each segment, promotional content is presented within the game.
While the specific applications of this technology remain unclear, Microsoft has previously stated its interest in exploring innovative ways to enhance player access to its software, services, and hardware. The company has initiated testing of an ad-supported tier for Xbox cloud gaming.
Additionally, there are rumors regarding a potential overhaul of Xbox Game Pass tiers, including the introduction of a lower-cost, ad-supported subscription option — a first for the service. Microsoft has not outright denied these rumors, stating that it “regularly tests different Game Pass offerings and looks at what works best for players in different markets.”
