Hideo Kojima Addresses Sony’s Withdrawal from Physint, Discusses Future with Xbox
- Hideo Kojima reveals Sony’s decision to stop publishing the game Physint was made in June 2023.
- Kojima is uncertain about the game’s release platforms and suggests the questions are for Xbox.
- Physint’s engine is still under consideration, with potential technology support from Xbox.
Hideo Kojima, known for his work on Metal Gear and Death Stranding, has commented on Sony’s unexpected choice to withdraw from the publication of his tactical espionage project, Physint, a decision made in June 2023. Following this shift, Kojima managed to secure support from Xbox for funding and publishing, but the move has generated numerous inquiries.
One pressing question is regarding the game’s availability across platforms. Kojima noted, “I don’t know the answer to that – that would be a question for Xbox,” in an interview with IGN. He added that Xbox had previously shown interest in reaching as many gamers as possible, regardless of platform.
While Xbox has historically employed a multi-platform strategy, that approach has recently evolved under new CEO Asha Sharma. The company is now focusing on exclusives, as evidenced by their announcements that titles such as Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will not be released on PlayStation. Nevertheless, some games, including Forza Horizon 6 and Fable, are still slated for PS5, which leaves room for speculation about Physint’s future.
Kojima stated, “I think all of that will be announced at a later time. I’m not sure yet, and I can’t really say.” His comments highlight the uncertainty surrounding the game’s release details.
Another significant topic of discussion is the engine that will be used for Physint. After establishing his independent studio, Kojima Productions, Kojima took considerable time to select an engine for his next project, which ultimately became Death Stranding. He settled on Guerrilla Games’ internal engine, which was provided on the condition that his team would contribute to its development. Initially unnamed, the engine was later designated as Decima.
When asked whether Physint would utilize the same Decima engine, Kojima responded, “Well, I haven’t really decided yet. I’m still experimenting.” He explained that after aligning with Xbox, they assured him of substantial technological support. Upon visiting Xbox during the Don Mattrick era, he was impressed by the various laboratories and cutting-edge technologies being explored there.
“I was thinking, ‘There are so many Doc Browns from Back to the Future here!'” he highlighted. “So I want to use all this new technology. Anything that I can use, I want to use, and I’m looking forward to teaming up with Xbox, but I really haven’t decided about the engine.”
Additionally, it’s important to note that Kojima Productions’ upcoming project, OD: Knock, also backed by Xbox, is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. This raises the possibility that Kojima may opt for Epic’s popular engine for Physint as well. However, with OD: Knock lacking a release target, fans may need to wait an extended period before seeing Physint come to fruition.
