Bungie Unveils Future Plans for Destiny 2 and Marathon Amidst Recent Challenges
- Bungie reveals plans to un-vault older Destiny 2 campaigns and raids.
- Studio leadership acknowledges recent trust issues with the community.
- Marathon needs to evolve as it hasn’t attracted enough players.
Bungie is taking significant steps to improve its offerings with Destiny 2 and Marathon, following a challenging period for the studio. The leadership announced plans to begin un-vaulting earlier Destiny 2 campaigns and raids, aiming to build a future for the popular MMO-FPS hybrid.
In an online statement, studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane acknowledged past missteps, noting, “Bungie has been creating games for over 30 years and we have welcomed the communities that have formed around them. Over the last few years, we lost sight of that, and there have been real consequences. We lost trust, we lost incredible colleagues, and we lost sight of what we should be prioritizing most, our players.” They expressed that while fans may not immediately regain trust, efforts to enhance both Destiny and Marathon are underway.
Earlier this year, Bungie laid off at least 290 employees shortly after releasing a final update for Destiny 2. Reports indicated that, at the time, there were no active development projects related to Destiny, including Destiny 3. Despite this, the studio declared that “Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future.” They emphasized the need for time to develop new stories and worlds within the Destiny universe, maintaining, “All of this is to say, we are not done with Destiny.”
Bungie has not announced any new games but is set to un-vault several Destiny 2 campaigns, locations, and raids that were previously locked. Players can expect access to these un-vaulted features in the upcoming months, as Bungie aims to refine existing content to meet current stability and gameplay standards.
Regarding Marathon, Bungie acknowledged that the extraction shooter “did not reach as many players as we had hoped, and we also know and understand that the game needs to evolve.” The studio intends to enhance the game’s existing qualities while also pushing beyond its initial genre constraints. A new permanent PvE mode and social space are scheduled for December, potentially broadening its appeal beyond competitive gameplay.
