Marvel’s Wolverine: Why Mystique’s Lesbian Love Story Is Hidden in Some Countries!

Date:

Players Report Censorship of Mystique’s Relationship in Marvel’s Wolverine

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Players have accused Marvel’s Wolverine of censoring Mystique’s lesbian relationship with Tyger in the Middle Eastern version.
  • Social media posts reveal blurred imagery and redacted dialogue related to their marriage.
  • This censorship is part of a broader trend in media within certain regions, including previous instances in other games.

Some players of Marvel’s Wolverine claim that the game’s depiction of Mystique’s lesbian relationship with Tyger has been censored in the Middle East. Various posts on Reddit and other social platforms detail differences between altered and uncensored versions of the game.

A report by Kotaku highlights a screenshot shared by an X user, which shows a blurred photo of Mystique and Tyger on their wedding day. Although players can still pick up the photo, it appears completely blank. Another user on X posted a blurred screenshot of a letter between the two characters that cannot be read.

The screenshots reportedly originate from the Middle Eastern version of Marvel’s Wolverine. Further evidence of censorship can be seen in a Reddit post featuring a game clip where the word “wife” is muted in dialogue about Mystique’s relationship, while the subtitle displays asterisks instead.

This incident highlights a common strategy among publishers in the Middle East, where certain terms, especially those related to religion and same-sex relationships, are often muted or removed altogether. This phenomenon is prevalent in both films and television series aired in that region, where certain subjects are sensitive or prohibited.

For example, shows like Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys have seen similar censorship, particularly regarding subjects tied to religious themes. Viewer complaints have also arisen from audiences in other regions, such as India, who have reported similar censorship practices.

It’s important to note that while certain references to Mystique’s relationship have been altered, the relationship itself remains a part of the game’s narrative. In the uncensored version, their marriage plays a central role in the storyline, influencing Mystique’s interactions, particularly with Wolverine.

This situation is not unprecedented for Insomniac Games and Sony. Previous titles, such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, were also modified ahead of their release in Saudi Arabia to eliminate LGBTQ+ references, including the removal of the Pride Flag and a mission featuring a gay couple.

The General Authority for Media Regulation in Saudi Arabia confirmed in September 2023 that Marvel’s Wolverine had been classified after its developers made unspecified modifications to the game.

Concerns persist regarding the impact of the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s acquisition of companies like EA, which has historically included LGBTQ+ characters in its games. As reported, there is unease that a Saudi-owned EA may alter its approach to these narratives.

Eurogamer has reached out to Sony for further comment on the censorship in Marvel’s Wolverine.
